Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2026: Fully Funded Study and Research Opportunities in Switzerland For International Scholars

 Switzerland is known for its quality of education, innovation, and research. Through the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2026–2027, Switzerland is once again welcoming talented scholars from around the globe. The fully funded scholarships help exceptional international students, researchers, and artists continue their education and development at world-class institutions in Switzerland.

About the Scholarship

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are awarded by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) with the support of the Swiss government to promote international cooperation in education and research by supporting outstanding candidates from over 180 countries worldwide. 

The program is open for:

  • Master's-level studies in the arts
  • Doctoral (PhD) and Postdoctoral Research
  • Advanced research projects at Swiss public universities, universities of applied sciences, and federal institutes of technology

Who can Apply?

Eligibility is open to applicants from all countries as long as they satisfy the academic and personal criteria below. The applicant must:
  • Have a master's degree or equivalent by July 31, 2024
  • Were born after December 31, 1989
  • Have not spent more than one year living in Switzerland before the planned start date of the scholarship
  • Submit a thorough research proposal with timelines
  • Secure a letter of commitment from a Swiss professor agreeing to supervise the research
  • There is the expected language skill relevant to their field of study and institution
  • Be willing to move to Switzerland for the duration of the program

Types of Scholarships 

1. Research Scholarships

These are open to postgraduate researchers in any field (who have at least a master's degree) and can be used for research leading to a doctoral or postdoctoral degree at Swiss cantonal universities, federal institutes of technology, universities of applied sciences, and four affiliated research institutions. A valid research proposal and supervision from academic supervisors in Switzerland are mandatory. 

2. Art Scholarships

This category is accessible to students completing a first master’s degree in the arts and supports study at any conservatory or university of the arts in Switzerland. It is offered only to applicants from a select list of countries.


Scholarship Benefits 

If selected, applicants will receive extensive support covering both living and academic costs while studying in Switzerland. Benefits will include: 
  • $1,920 monthly stipend to cover living costs 
  • Coverage for health insurance (non-EU/EFTA grantees) 
  • Airfare allowance at the end of the scholarship (non-EU/EFTA grantees)  
  • One-time housing allowance of CHF 300  
  • Annual half-fare public transportation card  
  • Mentoring and cultural events offered (e.g. guided tours, networking dinners, and support service with updates) 
  • No tuition fees charged by most host institutions

Application Process: A Step-by-Step Overview

In order to be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must complete a full application package. Please follow the steps below:

Step 1: Obtain the Official Application Package

Please go to the website or the Swiss diplomatic representation (embassy/consulate) in your country to collect the application materials that are available for your specific context.

Step 2: Prepare the Documents

The application package must include the following documents:
  • Signed FCS application form (typed and printed)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) with a list of academic achievements, research work and awards
  • Motivation letter (maximum 2 pages)
  • Research proposal (maximum 5 pages, signed), in correspondence to the FCS template
  • Letter of acceptance and short CV from Swiss academic professor, who agrees to supervise your work
  • Short CV of academic mentor from your home institution
  • Two sealed letters of reference from different professors (in university-specific FCS format)
  • Certified transcripts and diplomas, and related documentation (may need English or other official translations)
  • Signed medical certificate (in FCS health form)
  • Two passport copies (for dual citizens include both)
  • Copy of Swiss residence permit (if already in Switzerland)

Step 3: Submit Your Application

On the application you must send two identical sets of your application:
  • Set 1: original signatures + confidential recommendation letters + certified translations
  • Set 2: a complete copy of Set 1, without the recommendation letters

Program duration

The duration of the scholarship depends on the study program:
  • Research scholarships: 12 months (renewable depending on academic progression)
  • PhD programs: Up to 36 months
  • Postdoctoral programs: 12 months (non-renewable)
  • Art scholarships: Duration of the master’s program (maximum 2 years)
